Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a Wilderness Ranger? Find out today, volunteer and accompany our Pecos Wilderness Rangers for a backcountry overnight trip to Hermit's Peak!
This event will kick off with a moderate 4 mile hike on Saturday, September 8th. We will hike from the El Porvenir Trailhead (by the campground of the same name) to the summit of Hermit's Peak which has stunning views to the east. Once there, we will set up a basecamp and begin our work. There are a number of illegal campsites and fire rings at the summit plateau which detract from the wilderness experience of the area. Participants will assist in locating, documenting, and dispersing these campsites, leaving the area of the summit restored and beautiful. Volunteers will then camp overnight after a delicious backcountry dinner cooked by the ranger. In the morning, after breakfast (also provided) we will begin brushing and logout work on the Hermit's Trail north. This work will mostly be done with loppers and hand saws. We may bring a crosscut as well for larger trees.
For Folks who want to get out for the day but be home in time for supper, we will provide opportunities for day work that doesn’t require overnight camping, just let us know your needs.
