Explore the SE New Mexico's Public Lands Above and Below Ground!
When was the last time you went caving and hiking in the same day? Well, here's your chance!
Explore southeast New Mexico's wild BLM lands - both above and below ground - with New Mexico Wilderness Alliance volunteer guide Gosia Allison-Kosior on this multi-sport adventure to the Chosa Draw Area of Critical Environmental Concern and points below. The caves in this area are perfect for the novice caver. Whether you're new to caving or not, join us for this adventurous day exploring public BLM lands outside of Carlsbad New Mexico. FREE EVENT!
This trip will be a combination of caving and hiking. Caving will entail exploration of rarely visited caves in the Chosa Draw area - no crawling, but your feet might get wet. Hiking will be off-trail exploring a gypsum canyon, enjoying scenic vistas, and learning about the unique karst features outside of Carlsbad. Distance will vary but not exceed 6 miles. Difficulty for both the caving and hiking is easy to moderate. If there's time and interest, we may also drive to a nearby selenite mine where we can (legally!) collect gypsum specimens for personal use.
Please bring your regular day hiking gear PLUS a headlamp and helmet (if you have one). A bicycle or other sports helmet will do.
