Walking Into History: Thru-hiking the Grand Canyon
In the winter of 2015-16 Elyssa Shalla and Matt Jenkins completed an historic 700-mile journey hiking the length of the Grand Canyon. Elyssa is the first woman to thru-hike the Grand Canyon in a single trip, and they are the first couple to thru-hike the canyon in a single trip. They will describe their epic adventure in a one-hour program, followed by Q&A with the audience. This event is a fundraiser for New Mexico Wild; tickets are $10 per person. Doors open at 6:30, program begins at 7:00 pm.
About the Presenters
Elyssa Shalla and Matt Jenkins are drawn to protecting and exploring the wild places of the American West. After completing Master's degrees in music performance, the couple moved to northern Arizona in 2009, where they are now backcountry rangers for Grand Canyon National Park, specializing in resource education and resource protection, respectively. In 2013, they completed Graduate Certificates in Wilderness Management from the University of Montana. Their research pertaining to resource management below the rim of Grand Canyon will appear in the forthcoming issue of Park Science, the research journal of the National Park Service. Matt has also contributed articles and/or images to publications such as Percussive Notes, Perspectives of New Music, Backpacker, and contributes to the Hyperlite Mountain Gear blog. Backpacking, climbing, rafting, and photography are the modes through which they continue their pursuit to understand the vast landscapes outside their back door. Their goal is to share their experiences in those wild places with friends, family, and the public.
