Service Project
THE PLACE: From the Pecos River Valley to Hermits Peak, the southern end of the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains contains some spectacular landscapes. The Pecos / Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest oversees much of this landscape which includes a large portion of the Pecos Wilderness.
THE PROJECT: As of this writing, we are still working on the details of the project with the Pecos / Las Vegas Ranger District. For last year’s project, we installed a kiosk and re-established two river crossings along a hiking trail to protect the river’s banks. We camped at the end of the road following the Rio Gallina. It was a perfect place to be in the summertime.
MEALS: For Friday dinner, NMWA will provide salad along with either a pasta meal, chili, or a hearty lentil soup. For Saturday, we’ll have breakfast burritos and then sandwiches for lunch. Dinner on Saturday evening will be either a hamburger cook-out or Dutch oven specialty. For Sunday breakfast, we’ll have assorted fruits, breads, and cereal. Vegetarian options will be available for all meals.
Maximum participants: 30
Driving distance: 2.5 hours N of ABQ;
