At Aeroplane Mesa Campground and Trailhead
New Mexico Wild is supporting the Gila National Forest in the 100th anniversary of the Gila Wilderness by installing a two-panel kiosk at the Aeroplane Mesa trailhead, located on the Reserve Ranger District (4 miles east of Snow Lake). The kiosk displays a map of the official centennial loop trail and describes the important features and history of the Gila Wilderness. New Mexico Wild in partnership with the Gila National Forest is hosting a volunteer weekend to get some of this work done!
When: Friday, June 14-16, 2024. (Meet at Aeroplane Mesa before dark on the 14th)
Where: Aeroplane Mesa Campground and Trail Head, Reserve Ranger District, 4 miles east of Snow Lake, Gila National Forest (coordinates: 33.41817, -108.44125)
Work will include:
- 2 nights camping at Aeroplane Campground.
- Hand digging three large post holes to place kiosk supports.
- Constructing metal Kiosks, placing in holes and mixing cement to support kiosk.
- Trash cleanup.
Volunteers are asked to bring:
- Camping gear (tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, cooking utensils, boots, etc.)
- Work gloves (the Forest Service will have some on hand, but good to have a backup pair), hat, sunscreen, work pants/shirt/boots.
- All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks EXCEPT for Saturday night. NM Wild will make a Saturday evening meal.
- A positive, fun, safe attitude!
