From 9 a.m until 4 p.m
At Nursery Spring Exclosure (adjacent to the Kingston Campground)
Join New Mexico Wild, Upper Gila Watershed Alliance, and local Kingston community members for a volunteer work day in the Black Range.
We will spend the day on Saturday, March 15 cleaning up the Nursery Spring exclosure, adjacent to the Kingston Campground. The Nursery Spring exclosure, nestled in the Gila’s Black Range, is a small but beautiful natural area beloved by the local community that supports an incredible diversity of birds and other wildlife.
Over the years, a couple thinning projects have left many piles of slash within the site that are taking away the site’s aesthetic and natural quality. For this volunteer work day, we will take an important first step toward the site’s long-term stewardship and clear the majority of the abandoned slash piles using wheelbarrows and carts, and then haul the slash to a nearby slash pit.
We will work from 9am to 4pm, and there will be a free cookout lunch! Camping optional Friday night and Saturday night. For those who spend the night, it is possible we may work for a couple additional hours Sunday morning. We will be working closely with the local community and dividing into different “stations” throughout the day. Feel free to join us for the whole day or just a part.
Please wear long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, sturdy shoes, and bring a pair of gloves, snacks, and plenty of water. If you plan on camping, please bring all of your own camping gear. IF you happen to have an extra wheelbarrow, or own a truck that you don’t mind using to help haul the slash to the slash pit, that might also be very helpful (but not necessary).
