Outstanding National Resource Waters: New Mexico Wild Submits Comment In Support of Nomination

Outstanding National Resource Waters (ONRWs) are a crucial designation for protecting water quality in New Mexico. This classification, part of the state’s Surface Water Quality Standards, provides the highest level of protection against future degradation for designated water bodies. ONRWs are recognized for their exceptional ecological or recreational significance, and their designation helps safeguard clean drinking water, preserve wildlife habitats, support the outdoor recreation economy, and build resilience against climate change impacts.

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has recently nominated 245 river miles across the state for ONRW status. This initiative covers portions of several important watersheds, including the Rio Chama, Conejos, Upper Rio Grande, Cimarron, Pecos headwaters, Jemez, and Rio Grande-Santa Fe.
