Join one of New Mexico Wild’s Wilderness Rangers for a 2–3 mile guided hike designed to help you get ready for backpacking season. This hands-on outing is a great chance to test your gear and build confidence before heading into the backcountry.
During the hike, we’ll check the fit of your backpack, review essential backpacking gear (and what you can leave at home), and learn how to pack your backpack for efficiency and comfort. You’ll also get practice hiking with a fully loaded pack—before you’re miles from the trailhead.
To get the most out of this experience, bring your backpack packed with your tent, sleeping bag, clothing, and other gear, along with lunch, snacks, and at least 2 liters of water. New Mexico Wild will have a limited number of backpacks and camping gear available to borrow if needed.
Please wear hiking shoes or boots with good traction, a sunhat or ball cap, and plenty of sunscreen. Hiking poles can also be helpful on uneven terrain.
