Mining Threats

From the Rio Chama to the Gila

Our Land, Our Water, And Our Communities Are Not for Sale

New mining proposals are emerging in rural and Tribal areas, including in the Gila, Otero Mesa, Greater Chaco Canyon, and the Rio Chama. These landscapes hold cultural, ecological, and spiritual value for New Mexico’s communities, yet proposed mining activities threaten scarce water supplies, wildlife habitat, air quality, night skies, and the integrity of sacred sites. For communities in uranium mining regions especially, these threats echo decades of contamination and decisions made without their participation.

We’re fighting back. Sign the petitions below to tell decision-makers that our wilderness, our water, and our communities are not for sale.

NO MINING IN ANTELOPE PASS

Antelope Pass in the Peloncillo Mountains is one of the most biologically remarkable landscapes in the Southwest, and Canadian-owned Almadex Minerals wants to mine it. Sign the petition to keep this irreplaceable wildlife corridor out of foreign mining hands.

NO MINING IN THE CHAMA

The Chama Basin has nourished traditional New Mexico communities for centuries, and Canadian-owned Gamma Resources wants to drill for uranium in it. Sign the petition to keep our water and our culture out of foreign mining hands.

NO TERERRO MINE

The Pecos Watershed is still recovering from a mining disaster a century in the making, and an Australian company wants to drill there again. Sign the petition to protect the Pecos River, its wildlife, and the communities that depend on it.
