MEDIA ADVISORY: New Mexico Wild and Community Unite to Spotlight the Future of our State’s Waters, Demand Action

Community press event on Saturday, June 27th highlights urgent need for river health ahead of upcoming legislative session

WHAT:
New Mexico Wild will host a community press event in the dry bed of the Rio Grande to draw attention to the urgent state of New Mexico’s rivers and waterways. Guest speakers will share the history and context of the Rio Grande and the state’s rivers, provide an overview of upcoming river protection legislation, and discuss ongoing efforts to restore healthy water flows across the state. The event will also feature a musical performance led by Singing Resistance ABQ, joining together in song as a powerful expression of commitment to healthy rivers. Attendees are invited to sign a petition calling on state legislators to do more to protect New Mexico’s waters HERE.

WHO:
  • Gov. John Galvan — Governor of the Pueblo of Jemez
  • Laura Paskus — New Mexico environmental journalist, author of At the Precipice: New Mexico’s Changing Climate, editor of Water Bodies, producer and host of “Our Land” on New Mexico PBS, and author of a forthcoming book on New Mexico’s rivers
  • Tricia Snyder — New Mexico Wild River and Waters Program Director
  • Singing Resistance ABQ — Community choir sharing songs of resistance and solidarity
Spokespeople will be available for onsite interviews.

WHEN:
 Saturday, June 27, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.

WHERE:
 National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC), Albuquerque
Meet in the northwest corner of the parking lot. The event will be held in the dry riverbed west of the NHCC and south of Avenida Dolores Huerta.
