Join New Mexico Wild for a community hike in the Gila National Forest to learn about the Roadless Rule and the current threats facing these important areas.
Inventoried Roadless Areas (IRAs) protect some of the most critical ecosystems on Forest Service lands — and right now, they’re under threat. Any day, we’re expecting the next phase of the Trump Administration’s proposal to strip these areas of their protections. Come hike with us, learn what’s at stake, and find out how you can help.
We’ll explore the “Contiguous to Gila Wilderness and Primitive Area” Roadless Area — a stunning landscape just 20 minutes from Silver City — hiking up Pipe Springs Canyon on an old, unmaintained but easy-to-follow trail, with possible light off-trail sections. Highlights include a beautiful ponderosa forest, seasonal creeks and cascades, and a gorgeous bedrock canyon.
This hike is approximately 4–5 miles at a relaxed pace. Please bring plenty of water, appropriate hiking footwear and clothing, hiking poles if you use them, and snacks if desired. A high-clearance vehicle is needed to reach the trailhead, but carpool space will be available.
To learn more about the Roadless Rule before the hike please read our Roadless Rule resource document or watch our youtube video here.
