Our stewardship volunteers help maintain the health and accessibility of New Mexico’s wilderness areas. Held across the state, these events can span a few hours to several days.

Wilderness Defenders are the eyes and ears of New Mexico’s wild lands, conducting vital monitoring and data collection across the state’s public lands. This program, named after our venerable co-founder, helps protect these precious areas by documenting conditions and identifying areas that need additional protection or maintenance.

The Wilderness Ranger Program works to increase stewardship in Wilderness Areas across the state by providing a range of important services like wilderness character monitoring, trails assessment, trail clearing, campsite rehabilitation, public outreach and Wilderness education. Their work provides valuable information on current Wilderness conditions while enhancing public safety and contributing to positive Wilderness experiences for visitors.
