Federal permits are now allowing ranchers to kill endangered Mexican gray wolves seen within certain grazing allotments on public land — including potentially rare and genetically valuable individuals.
Today’s wild wolf population descends from just 7 individuals and has already lost more than two-thirds of its original genetic diversity. Every breeding adult matters. Broad lethal permits, issued without verified evidence of predation or required nonlethal deterrence risk unraveling decades of hard-won recovery.
